Looking for another car

I have three theories on cars 10+ years old with 100k or less. A) Grandma and Grandpa owned the car and drove it every other day, did 'recommended' maintenance most times. B) Someone who drove a couple of 3-5 mile trips every day (they're averaging <25 miles per day they owned the car) or C) someone who used the car as a 3rd car, and either kept it well maintained, or because its a Volvo, didn't

For C: its easy to determine which by talking to them/checking fluids. If they maintained the car's worth what they asked.

For B: its possible the car is worth it, but odds are good the car needs some maintenance. Hopefully timing belt and such have been done, but its possible it hasn't. Odds are you need to carefully inspect the car because its a crapshoot.

For A: it is very likely you will have records of maintenance done. Paging through it can verify the car's good, though it is not uncommon that major maintenance is due.

Either way, volvo's crave highway miles. I'd rather have the 98 with 200k than 100k for two reasons: 1) its very likely price is 2-3k (if not more) less than their 'low mileage' counterparts. 2) highway miles are actually good for the engine. These engines like to rev at 3k+ because that really cleans the valves. Less starting and stopping is also much easier for the engine/transmission. It is not a coincidence that Volvo recommends 10k intervals for oil changes if its highway miles and 5k if its city (read stop and go) travels.

Finally, to the OP don't let me being cheap skew your view. Your values are very likely different than mine, but the '07 will get you 10+ years without much problems (assuming you keep it well, considering you had a 92 this long I think you do..) .. Then I can swoop in and buy it for 10-20% of what you paid!
