Tailgate cylinders 850 1997

Mentioned to the service tech during my 30K service that the tailgate on my wagon had gotten stiff (i.e., it still goes up, but must be pushed up by hand the last few inches to reach its maximum opening). Diagnosed as the cylinders "binding". Replacement cost $340 and not covered under warranty!! This doesn't make any sense to me. These cylinders go bad after only 4 years and 30K and Volvo won't replace under warranty. Anybody have a similar experience or opinions? Thanks!
