I woulda thot

1) engine knock on cold meant the big (crank) ends were worn.

2) goo on the dipstick - that's a sign of a blown gasket.

What's this reputable dealer tell you was the reason for the above problems?

1) oh, they're all like that - ?

2) nothing to worry about, condensation from short trips?

dunno, bout you, I wouldnt even go near a car like that. lotsa other decent cars around I'm sure.
