Check Engine Light and Unable to add fuel 850 1996

While driving from San Francisco to LA last week, the Check Engine Light came on while I was going up the Grapevine (long hill). It was a hot day, temperature outside was around 105F. The things that came to mind first were O2, or EVAP. After the hill, I drove to the closest station to check the oil and fuel up. The oil was ok, but I was unable to put fuel into the tank. The pump at the station just would not engage. To make the long story short, four days later, at a much lower temperature and lower sea level, I was able to fill up the tank. A few miles later, the MIL turned itself off. My guess is the vapor pressure in the tank the cause of these problems. Any of you have these problem before ? and how to deal with the fueling issue when this happened ? Andrew
