AC problem 850 1995

When I turn the climate control fan on and switch th AC buttom to "Auto", the compressor turns on and off with the interval around 5 second continuously. Is it normal? I drove it to Volvo, they said the freon is leaking and they have to put new colored freon for tracking the leaking.
