help me pick out a volvo model

All newer Volvos came with synthetic fluids. Owners and some dealers will pour in the cheap stuff, because they are cheap. Mobile was the first to have synthetic, other companies followed suit, and it is up to you to find and use a 'full' synthetic regardless of refiner. And use of synthetics does keep the PCV cleaner.

"Highway" miles means nothing to me. My wife commutes 30 miles round trip, all highway. But, during rush hour, it is stop and go the entire way. My oter vehicle is a true highway car, only used for long trips and never in rush hour.

If you let a Volvo dealer inspect the car for $100, you will get a nice report of potential problems. Remember, they are looking for repair business and will include questionable items.
