Brake Cable Clicking V70-XC70 2000

AWD XC making lots of "clicking" sounds reminicent of half-shaft that I just replaced 6mo's ago for $700 and some change. VOLVO independent relayed that some pin (?) was bent, resulting in this noise and estimated $800 to perform the repair while suggesting that I have both sides done at same time. Is this a safety issue...other than not being able to use hand-brake? The noise is really annoying and would like to fix, buth that's a lot of cash to part with. Any ideas? Thanks
