Winter Mode V70-XC70 2004

During a recent road trip, while waiting in the car for my wife to make purchases in a grocery store, I thought it would be interesting to engage and monkey with the Winter Mode. The short version is that even when the shifter is in Drive position, the "W" button does not depress or make any sort of clicking sound. LED lights are absent on Dash and in the Button. No warning lights or messages on Trip Computer. Car seems to run and drive without any problems. The original transmission appears to have been replaced at about 13,000 miles. Is this a big deal, or, as I am inclined to think, nothing at all to worry about? Car's got about 114,000 on the odometer.
