Help with my 4 cylinder 850. 850

My daughter got home with her 96 850 NA after loosing compression on cylinder #3. She drove it something like 700 miles on 4 cylinders(500 with the injector for the bad cylinder unplugged). I am trying to dicide what to do with the car. Assuming this didn't damage the bottom half, What are the chances that I can get away with replacing the head? Or should I just get another complete motor?

What diagnostics should I do before disassembly? I am thinking at least listen to the engine with a stethoscope, look at the spark plug and maybe give the engine a seafoam treatment, though it's prolly too late for that.

Is there anyway to tell if its a burnt valve versus a bad lifter or cam lobe?

Mike
