850 fan keeps running 850

Hi,
Last week, the temperature gauge on our 1997 850 started pointing to the low end, and two days later the fan started running all the time, at times at high speed. (It sounded like a helicopter for about two minutes.) Also, th eCheck Engine light came on.
Our excellent, able-to-fix anything mechanic (Lucky, in Baldwin, NY) tells us it is either low coolant or the coolant temperature sensor.
The car is in Albany, NY, about 160 miles from our Volvo service shop, so has anyone had a problem driving under these conditions? Like maybe a drained battery or power draw on the motor?
Has anyone else had this problem, and what was it?
Thanks.
