Transmission locked in park 2000 S80 S80 2000

My wife had a hard time getting the key out of our S80 this evening and when I hopped in later, I could not get the car out of park. I tried to find some sort of sensor switch feeling along the path of the break pedal and had no luck. What should I be looking for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This will strand us more or less till we can get it fixed. I was looking to get a scanned image of the break pedal assembly so I can see what I should be looking for. I did notice a disc about the size of a nickel with a fastener in the middle of it that is attached to the break pedal shaft on the left side maybe 6" above the pedal. Should this be attached to something and that's where the problem lies?
