Volvo's headrests are consistently rated the highest practically in all crash tests. So the chance of benefitting from these aren't that small. Have you ever been rear-ended? I have. *Moveable* headrests in the car involved in the accident, Nissan Maxima, plain suck. I wish I had the Volvo's back then. By the way, as a result of that collision, which occured on a highway, the lumbar support was broken - by MY back (needless to say, the car was totalled).

As a tip, try to set lumbar to the firmest position, it just might help.

Also, it really depends on how close you sit to the steering wheel and the position of the seatback. Move the seat as far back as possible (your arm should be straight holding the wheel at 12 o'clock) This is a recommended driving position, it also reduces the risk of being injured in head-on or offset collisions, in particular - by the airbag itself. Try to recline the seatback a little more.
