Re: How difficult to replace PNP switch? 850 1994

Steve,

I replaced mine back in October. It's not hard, but involved. The Haynes manual shows the transaxle's main wiring connector on page 7B-3 and also a picture of the PNP switch. You must open up the main wiring harness and separate the PNP's connector. Volvo has a tool to properly adjust the switch. I don't have one of these but instead made some reference marks on the old PNP switch and transaxle housing and installed the new one in the same position. Both the battery and the air box must be removed. (A good opportunity to clean underneath). It took me about 3 hours, most of it cleaning the battery tray and the top of the transaxle (I'm anal!) BTW, i replaced mine because the car would occasionally not start (not turn over) unless I would wiggle the gear selector. This problem has been fixed. My transaxle also displayed some "quirky" behaviors, none of which have been eliminated by the PNP's replacement. Good Luck
