Brake Booster?? ALL 94

My trusty '94 855M has recently been "braking" hard. I checked the pads, made sure the 7mm hex bolts on the front calipers were free and well lubed, car does not pull to one side or another, just feels as though the vacuum assist is not doing it's thing. Most pronounced on inital braking after not using brakes for a little while.

Has anyone had to replace a vacuum booster, or could it be the check valve?

Or the master cylinder sticking (I'm reaching here!)?

thanks for any suggestions

just back from an 800 mile drive thru the north woods of Quebec in minus 15F weather. Glad I just replaced my thermostat!
