replacing my 850 wagon with a V70 01- V70-XC70

haha yeah I guess I see your point but the cooler and/or filter are more like preventative measures. They probably won't fix anything that's already broken/worn/etc. If the trans already has problems, don't even consider the car unless you're planning on replacing the transmission.

The additional cooler and filter wouldn't actually cost that much (less than $200?) and would make your trans much much more durable. And neither is that much work. I was simply pointing out some of the preventative measures available if the transmission issues are a concern. If you're planning on buying a 10+ year old car you should probably expect to do a little work to get it up to snuff.

If I bought a 2001 with a transmission that functions properly, I would personally still be concerned given all the reports of problems. I would check with the dealer right away on software updates, then do AutoRX treatment and then flush. Then flush again in ~10-15k miles. Than go to 30k mile flushes for a while. I would probably install a filter kit to ensure proper filtering, and if I was towing (at all) or driving in very hilly or mountainous terrain I would install a cooler too.

A couple of hundred dollars is not a big investment compared to the time and money it would take to replace a transmission. An ounce of prevention....
