Hot air temp 850 1996

So today after being told the hot air coming out with the heater set to hot and half-way on was too hot, I took a thermometer to it and found that it on the drive home from work it reached 151F. I think its OK because i do have the heat on a certain temp (isn't a mechanical linkage to the valve or something?) and the fan half-way on. Engine temp was at 221F.

If I'm way outta range where should I start looking into lowering it? I don't mind the heat but in the summer it still usually blows 'engine bay' temp, which I always assumed normal (A/C's been gone 6-7 years I think.) as it sucks up from under the car. I figure I'm not at a large risk of ruining something else, but of course the pessimist in me figures I'll blow a heater hose or something now that I've identified a problem area if I just sit on it..

If you're not driving it "like its stolen," are you really driving?
