Back up lights are activated by a switch on top of the trans. This switch also prevents start unless in neutral or park, and gives gear position information to the trans ECU. It's a bitch to replace the 1st time, and the trans conector is easily damaged if you don't take it apart corectly. Odds are this switch is bad. Recomend dealer or good independent volvo specialist.
