98' V70 Climate control issue... V70-XC70

My 98' V70 has a climate control system that has the following:

When I start it up two of the lights on the fan I believe and the recirculation are flashing for about 20 seconds and then go off.

The owners manual says that I should take it into the dealers and have it checked.

Can any one tell me what might be causing this and what I should be checking to remedy the situation as I do not want to take this to the dealership to have fixed.
