overheating damage?? 850 1995

My son, who has had only 240's ( and my 740) all his life is eying a 95 850 turbo that his friend stopped driving because he overheated it. Car is otherwise in OK shape. I'm wondering if it is worth fixing. I and he are well versed in the B20,B23 and B230 engines for the last 30 years.
Now we are going to take the plunge into the FW drive Volvos. But what am I up against with an 850 overheated engine? Would it be better to just replace the entire engine from a junkyard? Or try to resurface the head?
WE need to tow it down from Dallas to the Rio Grande Valley (600 miles) so I can use my friend's lift to do an engine swap. If it only requires an engine rebuild, then no towing would be involved, correct?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
el Raidman
