If water entered there will be evidence of water. You would have known this.

The air filter would have been soaked and there would be other tell-tale signs of water that woul exist in intake tract (water would have to pass air filter, MAF sensor, turbo, intercooler, and then into throttle and intake and then to piston tops).

If the injectors stuck open and hydraulic locked the engine it can bend rods and the only evidence is bent rods. Of course, the engine would have been very hard to start at one time when this occurred and would have started and missed a few seconds until raw fuel was cleared out of engine.
