Pull up the rear carpeting behind the back seat, you will see a couple of access panels held down by 10mm bolts. The one in the center of the car is the one you want to inspect. Just look for gasoline around the plastic nut, there should be plenty of fumes.

If you can wait for your mechanic to get over his new year's hangover, have him look at it, and replace the gasket.
