Booster Hissing - other sources? V70-XC70 2002

Is a bad booster the only potential source for hissing inside the firewall near brake pedal? Or are the any other sources - ie lines, check valves, etc. I'm trying to diagnose if my wife's v70 t5 needs a new brake booster. Low consistent hissing started today. With engine off though there is still plenty of resistance. Pedal won't move.
Any tests, tricks, etc. Boosters are pretty pricey and I don't want to replace if it is not needed. Also, is replacing in on a US V70 LHD pretty easy?

Thanks.

James
