Gear selection on snow 850 1993

Thanks for any input in advance. Since mother nature has really been laying dawn the snow in the Chicago land area, I am wondering about the best gear selection for driving under heavy snow. In the trusty 740's, I used to shift the car gradually from the bottom gears to drive depending on the snow level. I lately been using the same method on the 850, but I think that maybe, I should be using the winter bottom on the switch instead of manually shifting from L to Drive. What experiences have some of you notice with any selection of gears? Any other alternative methods or ways to prevent from been stuck in the snow.
