noise in 2001 s40 S40-V40 2001

I have a buddy, just picked up a 2001 s40. When the car is in gear (F or R) and he applies the brakes, there is a electric servo type noise, and then again when he lets off the brakes. He says the brakes work fine. I don't hear it in my 01 s40. I am thinking it is probably related to the ABS. Anyone have an idea, or do you think I am close?
