sudden coolant loss? V70-XC70

I went to start my 2004 NA 180k miles and got a message that coolant level was low and to stop the engine. I did. Checked the overflow tank and was surprised to find it dry. Cap was not loose. Took less than a liter to fill it, in fact, I overfilled it almost to the top. The last time I checked it was fine, then one day it's low. We had a big cold snap in the weather, but I'm still perplexed. There was no puddle under the car. Sine then, driven the car for the last two days, probably 150 miles, and everything seems to be fine. I admit I have not checked the trans or the engine oil. Car runs fine. New water pump when I did the timing belt service at 105k.

I'll check the fluids tomorrow for anything unusual. Anyone seen this before? Overflow cap? Can't believe it could be a hose or the radiator...couldn't just stop on it's own. Suggestions?
