I'm not the end-all expert on FWD, but the remotes are something I'm pretty familiar with. In the early 70 series cars, the receiver is the problem, not the fobs. Yes, fobs can go bad. However if you are sure the fobs are okay, the issue is buried in the dash and is very expensive to fix at the dealership. Getting new aftermarket fobs is cheap--still won't solve the problem. Volvo fobs, like aftermarket fobs, have to be programmed at the dealership. In fact, what happens is that the receiver is keyed to the fob, not the other way as in most cases. I have read stories saying that the dealerships WON'T set you up if you bring in aftermarket fobs. Others saying they charge as much as $200 for programming plus the new Volvo fobs. Others say just charged for the fobs--programmed free (wow!).
When the system starts to get really sluggish or stops working completely, I have gone the aftermarket route. Bulldog Security now makes a wonderful system that costs less than $100 and comes with it's own processor, two remotes, and great support either on-line or on the phone. I've installed several of these in 70 series and 240s. You can get the system to flash lights, pop trunks, set security systems, just about anything your stock system does. No, it's not OEM. But for fifty bucks and a few hours work, worth my time and dime. I have one on my desk to add to my 242, run one in my 245, and I'm going to have to put one in our S70 soon as that system is getting unmanageable.
Good luck!
