"W" mode starts your car in 3rd gear, but allows the trans to shift to 4th and 5th gears (if you have a 5 speed). By putting your trans in the 3rd notch yourself, you will remain in 3rd...no up or downshifts and would stress and heat the trans over a long period of time not to mention crushing your gas mileage.
