Cat quality varies widely. Original and OEM cats are more expensive because new car manufacturers are required to warranty their emissions systems for (I believe) five years. The cat that you buy at Low Price Joe's has only got to work until your next emissions inspection. The internals of a cat are coated with expensive materials, but some are more expensive than others. read the Wikipedia entry on cats.
