Diagnostic Codes - Where is the box? V70-XC70 1999

It's not tough to build a little code reader for the 1996-1998 850/S70/V70 (not sure if it will work for the other cars of same era ie:S80 and S/V40) that will read most codes from the system the same way the old under-hood boxes did.

That guy built a pretty fancy one with a snazzy connector and selector switch and everything, but you really only need the LED and a switch.

I always planned on making one of these. If I ever do I will post where I bought the parts from. I suspect Mouser electronics will have everything needed.

In many ways this is better than a real scan tool, because Volvo had a habit of mapping two of its codes to a standard P code. (as an example I happen to know that Volvo codes 435 and 436 are both mapped to P0131).

Not sure if this works on US cars or not...
