leather ointment V70-XC70

I had quite good luck with neatsfoot oil.

I understand there is quite a difference in the quality of various types and brands. You're especially looking for an 'animal' based oil as opposed to a petroleum based oil.

Also, it will likely darken your leather a tiny bit, though I have to admit I can't tell on my dark grey seats.

Give the leather a good cleaning before you start with this.

This is a very messy treatment - the oil is thin and will run all over the place if you're not careful. Ideally you will have a whole day, and you can park it somewhere that it will get full sun all day. As early as you can in the morning, cover your seats (the leather seating surfaces are the only parts that need it - the vinyl probably won't care either way) and let it soak. Come back in two or three hours and wipe the whole thing down again.

On this second application you will see it's been sucked in much more on the parts that are more dried out. Make sure to focus your applications on these spots, and try hard to both work the oil in, and also to leave a good layer on top when you leave it to soak.

Repeat this procedure all day. Eventually you'll get to the night time and you should coat it one more time and leave it all night.

Clean it all up in the morning, and I guarantee you it will feel brand new again.

I did this procedure about 4 times last summer and it made a world of difference on my nearly-14-year-old seats. The rear seats, which had much less 'hardening' - really feel like new. The fronts are coming and will need more work this summer, but they are drastically improved.

I still use my regular cleaning and conditioning products as well about once a month. Come to think of it I haven't touched my leather once this winter - once it warms up I'll be out there with my sponge gooping something on there.

Another note - while it seems it is difficult to over-condition, it is pretty easy to over-'clean'. Some products claim to be a cleaner and conditioner in one, and you should avoid using these too much as the cleaners can have some bad effects on the leather, esp the 'finish'.
