Check Engine 850 1995

I was driving in today and while in traffic for 40 minutes my check engine light went on. Aproz. 5 minutes later my car's idle jumped and my gauges dropped. I gave it gas and everything was back to normal. My radio and lights stayed unchanged. Keep in mind the temp was 8F. I checked the A2 ECU codes and got a 1-2-3. After I cleared the code, i heard something mechanical move. WHat could that be. I don't have my Haynes book with me, but I would like to know what the problem is before I go home today.
