transmission clunk V70-XC70 2001

First, let me thank all respondents for your input. Here's how it played out:
I explained my issue to a trusted dealer in Watertown, CT; not surprisingly, they were very familiar with my complaint (and its solution). "CUSTOMER STATES
DISABLE STOP/ NEUTRAL FUNCTION IF POSSIBLE.PERFORM ECM UPDATE AND ROADTEST"
This was accomplished in less than an hour; the "Volvo Part 30677036-3 TCM UPGRADE" cost $35. Technician informed me that the shift points were changed--and that was 'a good thing", and also that the years of 'clunking' didn't harm anything. All in all, a satisfying fix for a bad (Volvo gas-saving) idea.
