Just curious, what are blued rotors? S70 1998

Hi all. I had the car serviced and also pointed out the rumbling/vibration I experienced when applying the brakes at a certain speed. The dealer replaced the rear rotors (under warranty) and receipt stated that they found 'rear rotors blued'. The service writer said that it meant the rotors had overheated but were not warped. I am assuming this is a condition prior to warping? What would have caused it?
