Newer Volvo mud guards--type of plastic?

I have a 2011 V50 and the Volvo front mudguards from 2008-2010 which are supposed to fit (according to Volvo) do not. It looks like the wheel well has been slightly altered, but the accessory mud guard has not been modified. The result is a cup roughly 1 cubic inch which would catch crap. What I'm thinking of trying is to cut a short section and heat plastic to reform to fit contours. The question is whether the type of plastic used can be softened/reshaped. Ayone have any idea? Thanks.
