Re: Lights out 850 1994

Annette,

Can I fix this? Yes! with little effort...however you need to determine what kind of toggle switches you have first. Early 850s (like my '94) had toggle switches that had soldered bulbs and bulb replacement was typically made by the dealer by replacing the whole switch! Volvo soon rectified this with a newer design that allowed for bulb replacement. Pop one of the switches out by carefully prying it out, taking care not to scratch the surrounding area. Unplug it fron the harness (two clips need pushing out) and look at the back. If you don't see a white base with a flat head groove on it (it turns counterclockwise for removing the bulb) then you have the older design. If you do indeed have the newer one, go to your dealer and ask for a replacement, maybe show them the old bulb for comparison. If you have the old design, do not purchase the original switch for replacement. Ask for the newer design found on the later models. It is ergnomically "better" and simply plugs into the original harness, you can now replace bulbs in the future. The price of both the old and newer design is the same so it makes sense to purchase the newer one. I have done this and replaced every toggle switch in my car with the newer design....Good Luck!
