Which S40 models are 'best' and 'worst' for reliability? S40-V40

I used to own a 1991 240, and performed most of the maintenance myself. (I successfully completed repairs ranging from oil/filter changes to timing belt/waterpump replacement to repairing a blown cylinger head gasket.) Lately, I have been driving a 2001 Nissan Altima GXE with 162k miles. I am considering purchasing a slightly "newer" vehicle (2004-2008) with less mileage, and the Volvo S40 is at the top of my list of choices.

Does the S40 have any "red flag" models? In doing research on non-Volvo websites, it seems that years 2000 (the first S40) and 2005 (re-designed body) should be avoided. Is that the consensus of the BrickBoard?

Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Southern Fried Volvo
(Currently Brick-less... hoping to change that very soon!)
