Tire Chains V70-XC70 1999

I have a '98 XC and I'd like to get some chains for it--state CHP requires you to carry them for use in certain conditions even if have AWD capability. The local Volvo dealer says that aftermarket cable chains will not work because of clearance issues, and thus I can only use a special lug mounted system that they carry for $320!! In looking through archives, someone did report that cable chains purchased through SCC (Security Chain Co.) will work on Volvo Wagons with 205/65 15 tires. Does anyone know for a fact they will work on XC model before I spring for the big money. Thanks for your help!--Gene
