you are correct in that its bevel gear fluid. I can't recall, does it come with a drain/blow off hole, or does that have to be drilled in? If it has one, then perhaps the plugs come out, if you've drilled, then perhaps thats why its leaking. Being stuck could lead to it really getting sloshed around too.

If you've never changed the oil, it might be time Here's a great guide on doing it and it will allow you to make sure that you have enough fluid in it.
