Key won't turn in ignition! V70-XC70

Can you turn the key to position 1 to unlock the steering? If so, it is possible to drive the car, just not very safely. Remove the plastic clam shell around the steering column, unscrew the electrical side of the ignition switch, and use a screwdriver to turn the engine on. Just remember, if the key goes to position 0, the steering wheel will lock!

The key lock is known to fail, a piece of metal breaks in the cylinder lock and prevents the key from turning. You will need to order a new lock assembly from the dealer, which includes a spare key(bonus).

You can remove the lock assembly yourself, using a punch to turn the screws counterclockwise. Drilling the screw out is not required (a real pain in the butt). Then install the new lock asseembly. The steeering wheel does not need to come off.
