I can't really imagine that it's set wrong, because the parts on these engines are all keyed and when the head was off you could see cyl 1 in TDC. I assume you had the crankshaft locked using a locking pin through the crank, so it could not move.

It's pretty easy to spot. If the TDC mark on the flywheel is visible in the 'window' in the bellhousing then the mark on the camshaft wheel should be at the top, in line with the marking on the rear cover (or if you fit the front cover it should be visible in the opening).

But again, I can't really imagine that going wrong.

At that moment the rotor in the distributor should be pointing at the connection for the first sparkplug. Firing order is 1-3-4-2 and cyl 1 is at the flywheel side.

I'm curious what the ECU may have to tell.. Possibly an injector fault if they turn out to be incompatible.

A compression test would be a good idea anyway. If you don't have enough compression, but you do have fuel and spark then it won't start either.
