About 4 weeks ago I bought a 1993 850 GLT (122,000 miles) and have been going over the car from top to bottom before letting my wife drive it. It has very little in common with my 1987 760 turbo (150,000 miles), but it is a very interesting car.
As a note to all, I noticed that the drivers side, inner CV boot was torn and had the typical spray of grease. From past experience with other cars, I found it best to just by a re-built axle so that you have two new boots, grease, etc. It seems that if you are going to go through the hassle of pulling the axle then you may as well replace as much as you can.
The trick was finding an axle. Autozone wanted $100 (plus the core) but didn't have one in stock so I ordered one from CARPARTS.com. After a week, they sent me an e-mail saying that they were no longer offering that re-built axle even though it shows on their web-site.
Eventually, I did find a place called cvunlimited.com which is owned by Stuckey Bros. in Hemingway, South Carolina. It cost me $69.95 + $7.50 shipping + $75.00 for a core charge. I have sent the core back for another $10.00 so I'll have $87 in the axle but it looks like they did a pretty good job re-building it. They send a new nut which is good as the axle must have been from a '94 or newer which have the larger nut and thread size.
Hope this helps if anyone else is getting ready to change a torn boot.
