BLOWN HEAD GASKET or OVERHEATING S80 2000

Greetings Bricksters,

I just purchased a 2000 S80 T-6 with 109K miles. The car is in spectacular condition with only a few minor cosmetic interior and exterior problems. The owner had the 100K warranty, had all service done by the dealer, and performed oil changes every 3K. At the 105K service he was informed the head gasket was blown. Due to the cost of the repair, he decided to sell the car. I bought the car from the second owner under the premise that the "...head gasket is blown". Since I am a capable home mechanic with many years of Volvo repairs, including engine rebuilds, under my belt I reasoned that the purchase price allowed for repairing MANY problems. KBB puts the car at about $5800 and I got it for $2K.

First off, the engine idles rock solid & runs brilliantly. The transmission is smooth and shifts accurately. No external oil or coolant leaks. Hoses are in good shape. Oil is fresh and clean with no signs of water. After performing a compression check and leak down test, I have concluded that the head gasket is not blown. However, the coolant does like to bubble through the coolant overflow tank after driving more than 45 minutes or so. The electric fan does come on, but only after the engine is switched off.

Does this sound like a problem with the FAN RELAY, THERMOSTAT, INCORRECT COOLANT/RATIO, WATER PUMP or something else? Is this "normal" for this car?

Any ideas/thoughts would be appreciated.

FYI: Tomorrow I am replacing the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and serpentine.

I already love this car! Great body design!
