How can mileage be checked on 1997 850? 850 1997

The odometer on my 1997 850 is broken. The repair is a scheduled project for warmer weather, and I acquired the vehicle two months ago. I've been reading about how to accomplish it and obtain the little gear that is likely broken. One of the first things I checked when I first obtained the vehicle was whether the timing belt had been recently changed, and, according to a sticker, it was changed approximately two years ago. I would, however, like to verify the mileage. I've seen on some earlier years where the codes can be obtained using OBD (correct me on this if I'm in error), however I am uncertain whether it can be done in the same manner with this year vehicle (1997).
