OBD-II should work .... 850 1997

I'm not 100% sure for your 1997 car, but I think that OBD-II (or OBD2) was mandated for all cars 1996-on. If your car is compliant with that, the mileage should be permanently stored on the OBD-II computer memory, and read by an appropriate reader.

You can get a code reader with that capability -- or, I have a Garmin GPS with an accessory called EcoRide (or something like that, $99) that gets left plugged into the OBD-II port (you remove it when you take the car for inspection or dealer servicing), and it reads the mileage, fuel consumption, and other trip computer-related info using BlueTooth to the GPS to enhance the GPS features (e.g., instant mpg, etc.). Maybe you've got a friend with a Garmin and that accessory?
