Air pump running after warm up

Senior moment. I know this has been addressed before, but I cannot find it.

Now that my car parks outside in the cold, I get all kinds of 'new' problems. I just heard my air pump run after about a 4 mile run. Engine temp gauge at normal, the outside temp is 25F. I parked in the driveway to kick the ice/sand off the mudflaps before sneaking the car into the garage to warm up. The air pump started to whine for at least 60 seconds and then shut off!

I know, I should not have heard the pump at all, but it is getting old. I was under the impression that the pump is only supposed to come on for the first couple of minutes after cold start, and never again. What could cause the pump to run again??????????

ECT sensor and thermostat (OEM) were replaced a few years ago.
