The level check is easy enough. Just open the hood and look at the reservior next to the firewall, right in front of the steering wheel.

When is the last time your brake fluid was flushed? 3 years is about max.

Check the brake pad thickness. If you have an allen wrench, remove the claiper slide pins and clean/regrease them.
