S40 advice S40-V40

Mort, what S40 model year(s) are you considering -- the "early" US version (2000-2004) or the later version (mid-2004 to current)? I just recently purchased a used 2009 S40 2.4i . . . Here are my observations regarding the later series:

PROS:
- Contemporary exterior styling
- Beautiful modern interior with "free-floating" center console
- Good fuel mileage
- Great deals can be found on the used car market
- Modern electronics = simplified maintenance and improved reliability

CONS:
- Contemporary exterior styling blends in with other cars in the parking lot
- The "free-floating" center console makes it difficult to upgrade the radio. (Get the premium sound system if you require great music.)
- Seat for 5 adults?!? Not on a long trip. Rear leg-room is just small and uncomfortable enough to encourage your friends to drive their car... This is a pro/con issue for me!
- Modern electronics = harder for diagnosis and DIY repairs of some issues
- Limited performance & upgrade options

Having said all the CONS . . . I'm really enjoying my S40!!! I did quite a bit of research, found what seems to be a decent model at a good price, and knew what I was getting into. Try to arrange an extended test-drive (keep overnight or for the weekend) before you buy.
