FWD snow chains S80 00

The S80 is my first FWD, and I don't drive very much in snow. I find that I have to take it over a fairly high mountain pass. Chances are pretty good that I will not encounter HORRIBLE conditions, but just in case, would chains do any good? I really do not want to lay out $$$ for winter tires all 'round since I so rarely have need to drive in snow. They would rot before I got much wear on them

Has anyone out there had any experience with chains on the S80? I would imagine that one wouldn't want to have them on unless absolutly necessary, but is it difficult to to drive with them? I would imagine that stopping would also be a bit tricky with the traction in front.

Thanx,
