timing belt 850 1996

What if you bought your 850 with more than 70,000k on it and you have no idea about the status of the timing belt.I read you should change it at 70k or you could risk breakage. Also if it breaks valves could hit pistons so i read.I have had other vehicles where the belt has broke and there was no engine damage. At any rate i don't know if it has been changed and cannot get that info.
