Synthetic Oil Weight - 10W40 or 10W30? Burning through oil? 850 1997

Hi,

I have a 1997 850 T5. My car has about 145K on it. I bought it with 84K or so on it. I've used fully synthetic oil since I bought the car, using 10W30 weight. I've noticed that my car is using up a lot of oil. After an oil change, let's say 1500 miles into it, the oil doesn't even register on the dip stick. I don't see smoke out of the exhaust when driving, only now and then if I punch the turbos. There are no significant oil leaks on the floor of my garage. So, where is all the oil going? Anyway, my mechanic suggested that I use 10W40 as it would be thicker and would last longer. What real differences would I see, or feel, or what effects would using 10W40 have on my 850 T5 compared to using 10W30? Would it be a good idea to use to avoid excess oil loss?

Thank you,

Michael
